LAZARO BARRERA, SANTA BARBARA STAKES NEXT WEEK’S FEATURES

Next week’s features at Santa Anita are the $100,000 Lazaro Barrera Stakes for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs on Sunday and the marathon $100,000 Santa Barbara Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1 ½ miles on turf on Saturday.

For the Barrera, trainer Bob Baffert has five sophomores nominated: Coach Prime, Mirahmadi, Normandy Landing, Parenting and Winterfell. The other key nominee is Ball Don’t Lie for trainer Mark Glatt, who popped a 97 Beyer Speed Figure when graduating going six furlongs here April 5.

On Sunday, Ball Don’t Lie worked five furlongs in 1:00.60. In his maiden win, the Blame colt pressed a lively pace and drove clear in the stretch under Frankie Dettori to score by 1 ½ lengths. Finishing 5 ¾ lengths back in third that day was Winterfell.

Winterfell was making his second start when beaten by Ball Don’t Lie. On Sunday, the Arrogate colt worked a half mile in 46.20 seconds. It was the second-fastest of 56 moves at the distance.

Mirahmadi has not started since a runner-up effort in the GI Del Mar Futurity Sept. 10. On Friday, the Into Mischief colt earned a bullet when working six furlongs from the gate in 1:11.60. It was his fifth work in the past six weeks.

On Saturday, last-out maiden winner Normandy Landing worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds. The Gun Runner colt graduated by 3 ¼ lengths when going a mile here April 20.

Neither Coach Prime nor Parenting worked this weekend. Coach Prime, by Quality Road, has been off since a third-place finish in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 16. Parenting, by Justify, won his debut just by 2 ¾ lengths just nine days ago when going 5 ½ furlongs.

Nominees for the Santa Barbara include multiple graded stakes winner Linda’s Gift for trainer Richard Mandella and Musical Rhapsody for trainer Phil D’Amato. Musical Rhapsody, who is GIII-placed, exits a sharp allowance win here April 4 when going 1 ¼ miles on turf. On Sunday, Musical Rhapsody worked five furlongs on the all-weather training track In 1:00.20. The runner-up in Musical Rhapsody’s allowance win, Vincero Grande, was also nominated to the Santa Barbara by trainer Mike Puype.

The field for the Santa Barbara will be drawn on Wednesday. The Lazaro Barrera field will be set on Thursday.

__ADARE MANOR, MISSED THE CUT AMONG SUNDAY’S WORKERS __

Grade I winner Adare Manor and three-time graded stakes winner Missed the Cut were among the notable workers Sunday at Santa Anita.

Adare Manor, winner of the GI Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park April 13, drilled four furlongs in 48.40 seconds for trainer Bob Baffert. It was her second work since earnings her first Grade I win in the April 13 Apple Blossom.

Missed the Cut worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds for trainer John Sadler. Missed the Cut most recently shipped to Keeneland and finished second in the GII Elkhorn at 1 ½ miles on turf April 20. In two previous starts this year, the 5-year-old Quality Road horse won the GIII San Luis Rey and GIII San Marcos, both at Santa Anita.

Working for trainer Doug O’Neill were stakes winner Two Rivers Over and E J Won the Cup. Two Rivers Over, who most recently won the GII Godolphin Mile in Dubai, worked five furlongs in 1:00.00. A 4-year-old Tamarkuz gelding, Two Rivers Over is a candidate for the GI Metropolitan Handicap on the Belmont Stakes undercard June 8 at Saratoga.

E J Won the Cup, most recently third in the GI Santa Anita Derby April 6, worked five furlongs in 1:00.

In all, there were 149 workouts on the main track and 40 on the synthetic training track.

1 WINNING PICK 6 TICKET PAYS $44K ON DERBY DAY AT SANTA ANITA

The $1 Pick Six at Santa Anita can produce robust payouts and that was certainly the case on Saturday. With just one winning favorite in the sequence, the Pick Six returned a handsome $44,545.50 for a single perfect ticket.

The winning ticket was purchased for $8,100 through TVG. Starting with the sixth race, the winning horses in the sequence were #7 Dancing Dana ($6.40), #3 Gold Phoenix ($13.80), #7 Where’s the Loot ($17.20), #10 British Isles ($11.40), #3 Rogue Son ($26.80) and #7 Hennys Crazy Train ($15).

The consolation payout for tickets with five winners was $515.90.

Sunday’s Pick Six starts with the fifth race at approximately 3:04 p.m. The competitive sequence averages 8.3 starters per race before scratches.

SUNDAY’S $1 COAST-TO-COAST PICK 5 STARTS AT 1:50 P.M. PT

The $1 Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 Sunday starts with the eighth race from Gulfstream Park at 1:50 p.m. PT. On Saturday, the Coast to Coast paid $24,956.30 for two winning tickets.

The first leg Sunday is an allowance/optional claimer at six furlongs on dirt. A field of seven is signed up led by 5-2 morning line favorite Adios Babe for trainer J.P Young. Jockey Jesus Rios rides.

Also part of the sequence is Gulfstream’s ninth, a maiden race for fillies and mares at one mile on turf. In a field of eight, Eastern Empress with Luca Panici up is the 2-1 favorite for trainer Christophe Clement.

Santa Anita joins the action with its third, fifth and seventh races. The third and fifth are both maiden races at six furlongs on turf. The third is led by All That Glory, who is the 5-2 favorite in a field of eight. Antonio Fresu rides for trainer Tim Yakteen.

The fifth has a field of nine led by 5-2 favorite Halfway Line, who will also have Fresu up. Halfway Line is trained by Phil D’Amato.

Capping off the sequence at approximately 4:10 p.m. is the GIII, $100,000 Senorita Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the hillside turf course. Laulne, with Fresu up, is the 5-2 favorite for D’Amato.

The Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 features a player-friendly 15 percent takeout rate. It is offered every Saturday and Sunday through the end of the Santa Anita Hollywood Meet June 16.

FINISH LINES: Jockey Hector Berrios won three races Saturday to move into second place in the jockey’s standings. Berrios scored with Island Cruiser ($11) in the opener for trainer John Sadler, Logon To Win ($9.40) in the fourth for trainer Cesar DeAlba and Hennys Crazy Train ($15) in the 11th and final for Sadler. Berrios has eight wins at the stand, one fewer than leader Kyle Frey…Santa Anita-based jockeys Umberto Rispoli and Antonio Fresu each won races on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs. Rispoli helped spring a major upset when piloting Trikari ($96.34) to victory in the GII American Turf Stakes for trainer Graham Motion. One race after the Derby, Fresu and Santa Anita-based Raging Torrent, trained by Doug O’Neill, served notice when airing by 8 ¼ lengths in a first-level allowance at seven furlongs on dirt. A 3-year-old Maximus Mischief colt, Raging Torrent most recently was second in Santa Anita’s John Shear Stakes on turf April 7… There were just two winning favorites on Saturday’s 11-race card at Santa Anita. For the meet, favorites have won at a below-average 26 percent clip entering Sunday…Live racing will resume Friday with first post at 1 p.m.
